Coco Gauff beat Elina Svitolina, not without difficulty, to reach the 8th finals of the US Open. The Spanish Paula Badosa and the Chinese Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng have also punched their ticket to reach this stage of the competition.

US Open defending champion, Coco Gauff suffered this Friday in the 3rd round against Elina Svitolina. The 122nd player in the world pushed the recent winner of the WTA tournament in Washington to the tie-break in the final set before however losing (4-6, 6-1, 7-6(8)). The rest of the Spaniard’s program will see her face the Chinese Yafan Wang. The latter, against all expectations, beat the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, seeded n°20, by the score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. At 30 years old, Yafan Wang reached her very first 8th final in a Grand Slam while the former world n°1 is still chasing a trophy since Cincinnati in 2020.

A remake of the Paris 2024 finale?

Earlier this Friday, China’s Qinwen Zheng easily beat Germany’s Jule Niemeier (6-2, 6-1)The Olympic champion, who has never won a major tournament, is reaching the last 16 where she could well play again against Croatian Donna Vekic, whom she outclassed in the final of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the very beginning of August. She will face American Peyton Stearns tonight.
