Diyarbakır is preparing to welcome Mawlid Kandili, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, with programs to be held in different mosques of the city, starting with the Ulu Mosque. This holy night, which is observed on the 12th day of the month of Rabi’ul-Awwal according to the Hijri calendar, has been celebrated in Islamic societies for centuries as an expression of love for the Prophet.
Mehmet Kapukaya, an expert at the Presidency of Religious Affairs High Board of Religious Affairs, stated in his statement regarding Mawlid Kandili that the narrations that the Prophet was born on a Monday are stronger.

Kapukaya stated that just as Prophet Muhammad did not celebrate his own birthday, such a practice did not exist during the time of the companions either. However, he gave information that Mawlid Kandili began to be celebrated officially, especially during the Ottoman period.
“He Communicated Verses That Prevent the Killing of Female Infants”
Kapukaya emphasized that Prophet Muhammad was sent as a mercy to the worlds and said:
“The Prophet Muhammad conveyed the verses that prevented girls from being buried alive during the age of ignorance. He is like a lamp that illuminates our path. Whoever follows this light will be saved, but those who choose the dark path will inevitably be dragged into disaster.”
