It costs an arm and a leg, but does it have enough to turn the players’ brains around? The PS5 Pro has been approached by some of the specialist press, and the first feedback is quite enthusiastic even if there are still questions.

More beautiful games. Who doubted it?

Several American and British media, such as The Verge, IGN, and Digital Foundry, were able to go to PlayStation US headquarters near San Francisco to take a closer look at the famous PS5 Pro as well as 11 games running on it. Sony is trying to justify the price of 800 euros – without integrated optical drive – with more beautiful and smoother first party and third party titles. However, as the previously cited sites note, not all graphical enhancements are equal. If the journalists present recognize that you have to have your nose glued to the screen to notice certain more in-depth details, the general impression is good: yes, the games are indeed more impressive on PS5 Pro. “It’s like dirty glasses are being taken out of my eyes” writes The Verge, which acknowledges having published the same sentence at the time of the PS4 Pro. The site adds that it has some reservations, because “hundreds of dollars“to pay to see results”breathtaking” only if you stand a few centimeters from the 4K screen.

The general opinion is that this PS5 Pro is aimed above all at those who play in “Performance”, and who will be entitled to the same fluidity, but this time with graphics to die for. Unsurprisingly, raytracing managed in 4K/60fps with the cursor pushed to maximum has little effect on racing games such as 24 and Gran Turismo 7. However, the mode “Performance Pro”, supposed to combine the best of both worlds (graphics and fluidity) thanks to the power of the PS5 Pro, still entails some sacrifices to respect the resolution/fluidity promises. This is the case of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or even Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart which avoid certain details (number of spectators in the stands, rendering of the windows) in order to be ever more beautiful without falling below the 60fps mark .

A tear in the eye

By all accounts, it is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which wins the prize for the most technically impressive game on PS5 Pro. Everything is described as magnificent, from the rendering of the landscapes to the locks of Cloud’s hair. It is “absolutely incredible” adds IGN. As for other games, Demon’s Souls and Dragon’s Dogma II do not always reach 60fps in the busiest areas but benefit from notable improvements. Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy, for its part , has three PS5 Pro modes The most graphically impressive, namely “.fidelity + raytracing” only runs at 30fps at the moment.

Like other software, Horizon: Forbidden West relies on PSSR to display 4K while the internal resolution oscillates around 1440p. That being said, according to the specialists who were able to try it, everything is sharper and more detailed than before. The Crew Motorfest benefits from a 4K/60fps upscale which increases visual comfort, like The Last of Us Part II Remastered which displays 4K/60fps thanks to PSSR (from a resolution of 1440p). As you will surely have noticed, Sony’s upscaling technology is used to avoid displaying native 4K. IGN says it’s particularly impressed with what PSSR can do on screen in making it look like no compromises are being made. If all this tempts you, know that the PS5 Pro will be released on November 7, 2024. Priced at 800 euros.
