Despite the strong competition, Tottenham managed to secure an option to purchase Cardoso as part of the agreement for Giovani Lo Celso’s transfer to Betis. Haro told Mundo Deportivo:
“Johnny is a player that interests not only Tottenham but many other teams, he has a great projection. In this case, within the Gio operation, they asked us for an option to buy for a value that was important and interesting and we gave them that option.”
The agreement between Tottenham and Real Betis allows Spurs to purchase Cardoso in the summer of 2025 for a fee ranging between £21 million and £25 million. There are also reports that if Spurs choose not to activate this purchase option, they might still benefit financially through a sell-on clause for Cardoso, despite never officially owning him.
While the fee might seem steep for a player with relatively little top-level experience, it’s a calculated gamble. This potential rise would make Tottenham’s initial investment look like a shrewd move.
