Not our tennis – The French player was knocked out in the first round of the Rennes Open after scoring only one short game

It’s been a long time since we talked about tennis with Benoît Paire. Well, beautiful tennis, the kind he played when all the planets were aligned, with a rather unique game. Having fallen back to 263rd place in the ATP rankings, the Frenchman seems very, very far from his best years. And his first round against the Briton Jacob Fearnley, 164th in the world, on Wednesday at the Rennes Open, confirms this.

The Avignon player was knocked out cold in a match that was over in less time than it takes to get a ham and cheese sandwich from the local bakery for lunch. Thirty-seven minutes of play in total and a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Fearnley, marked by countless errors from Benoît Paire, until that horrible double fault on serve to end the match.

A scandalous attitude on the court which provoked the whistles of some of the spectators who came to watch this match. To which Benoît Paire, physically diminished, responded by sending them kisses (…) - 20minutes
