Max Verstappen’s future: Red Bull’s Christian Horner hints at early departure amid paddock ‘circus’.

The world of Formula 1 might not have Max Verstappen for as long as fans and rivals hope. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed that the reigning world champion, known for his dominant performances and unfiltered opinions, could consider leaving the sport sooner than expected. The reason? The incessant “noise and circus” surrounding the paddock.

At just 27 years old, Verstappen has already cemented his place among F1’s greats, but the pressures and controversies of the 2024 season have sparked speculation about how long he will stay in the sport.

The “Circus” That Could Push Verstappen to Leave

Formula 1 is often described as a “traveling circus”, where the drama and rivalries are just as intense off the track as on it. For Verstappen, last season was particularly difficult. Clashes with key competitors, ongoing debates over an alleged “British bias” in the sport and growing frustrations over the political aspects of F1 have had an impact.

Horner did not mince his words when addressing the Dutchman’s possible early departure. “Some of the noise and circus around Formula 1 doesn’t suit him,” Horner admitted. “As long as he enjoys what he does, he will continue. But as soon as that pleasure diminishes, he has the strength of character to say: ‘You know what, I’m going to go drive GTs next year.’”

Other Passions That Attract Verstappen

Horner highlighted Verstappen’s various interests outside of Formula 1 as another factor that could influence his decision. The Dutchman enjoys racing in GT cars, on simulators and in LMP cars, adopting a more “old-school” racing mentality that contrasts with the modern spectacle of F1.

Although Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull ends at the end of the 2028 season, Horner acknowledged that contracts do not guarantee longevity in the sport. “We are very grateful that he is our pilot, and we hope that this will remain the case for many years to come, at least until 2028,” he said. “But no one has a crystal ball. »

Could Mercedes appeal?

Adding fuel to the fire is Mercedes’ alleged interest in Verstappen. With Red Bull’s performance dwindling in the second half of 2024, rumors of a potential Verstappen-Mercedes partnership have gained momentum. Although the Dutchman has shown unwavering loyalty to Red Bull, the lure of a new challenge with a top rival could be difficult to resist if Red Bull fails to regain its dominance.

Red Bull’s challenges in 2025

With Verstappen’s future up in the air, Red Bull faces its own battle heading into the 2025 season. Personnel changes within the team and preparations for the 2026 rule review put pressure on testing resources. The team must balance immediate performance improvements with long-term development, while keeping Verstappen motivated and engaged.

Will Verstappen leave?

For now, Verstappen remains engaged with Red Bull and Formula 1, but Horner’s candid comments suggest the Dutchman is not bound by tradition or expectations. His willingness to pursue other racing passions if the “fun” of F1 disappears says a lot about his personality and priorities.

With the 2025 season quickly approaching, the focus will remain firmly on Verstappen—not only for his brilliance on the track but also for the growing question of how long he will continue to light up the grid.
