Franco Colapinto’s arrival at Alpine puts Jack Doohan under pressure

The arrival of Franco Colapinto at Alpine as test and reserve driver for 2025 increases the pressure on the shoulders of Jack Doohan, hired alongside Pierre Gasly for the coming season.

Jack Doohan, who made his Grand Prix debut during the Abu Dhabi race, the last event of the 2024 season, after the ouster of Esteban Ocon. When joining Alpine, Jack Doohan would have signed a short-term contract with the French team. This flexibility could then allow Alpine to review its driver line-up in the event of performance deemed insufficient, as Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s executive advisor, recently recalled.

The only thing certain is death”, Briatore said. “We start the year with Pierre and Jack, I guarantee it. Afterwards, we will see during the season. I have to help the team get to a situation where they can get results.”

“The pilot is the one who must complete the work of the almost thousand people behind him. Everyone works for just two people. And if there is a pilot who does not progress, who does not bring results, he will then be replaced”, concluded the Italian.

By recruiting Franco Colapinto, Alpine ensures a solid and experienced option, ready to step in if Jack Doohan does not meet his team’s expectations from the start of the season.

Last season, the Argentine driver came to replace Logan Sargeant during the season. His Grand Prix results quickly satisfied Williams, but also attracted the interest of teams like Red Bull and Alpine. However, crashes at the end of the season somewhat hampered his future. His new role at Alpine allows him to keep one foot in F1, where places are expensive, but also and above all where you can quickly be forgotten if you don’t make yourself seen every race weekend.
