Flavio Briatore, executive advisor of Alpine F1 and historic manager of Fernando Alonso, made some confidences about the future of the Spanish driver in comments relayed by Motorsport. According to Briatore, Alonso could decide to retire after 2026, when his contract with Aston Martin F1 comes to an end. However, this decision will depend heavily on the evolution of the Aston Martin project, particularly under the direction of Adrian Newey, an engineer renowned for his high-performance cars. “It will depend on his feelings about the project with Adrian Newey, and the timing, I don’t know if he will have started a family at that time and so on,” believes the Italian.
Everything will depend on performance for Alonso
Briatore emphasizes that Alonso’s motivation remains intact, despite the years. “His performance is still there,” he says, adding that the Spaniard remains determined to fight for every place, even in difficult situations. His constant quest for competitiveness and his daily commitment always impress those around him. “He is unique, he never gives up,” adds Briatore.
However, there is uncertainty over his future after 2026. Briatore admits that he does not know whether Alonso will want to continue for another season or whether he will prefer to end his career. “If you ask me if Fernando wants to continue after his contract ends, I don’t know yet. Our last year will be 2026 for the moment with Aston Martin,” estimates the Italian manager.
