Adrian Newey has had an astonishing few weeks at Red Bull. The engineer was on the start at the time of the Miami Grand Prix, where he was present in the garages of the Milton Keynes team. He remembers spending a difficult weekend doing nothing but responding to the press.
“The Miami Grand Prix itself was strange because I was there as a strategist, so on the pit wall, but I wasn’t involved in any of the technical decisions, or in any of the technical meetings. ‘just ran around for the press, basically, and that’s not what stimulated me the most’ Newey said.
The engineer did not expect his transfer to become one of the most commented stories of the 2024 season: “But I never really thought it would be big news, to be quite honest, I never really thought about it. So the fact that it’s in all the papers and on TV and all that, It was a bit of a shock.”
Eddie Jordan, who managed Newey’s affairs, is pleased with the quality of the negotiations to manage the engineer’s departure with Red Bull: “I talk a lot. I’m Irish. The Irish talk a lot. But when there’s money at stake and you have to keep quiet, you do it. Invariably.”
“If I had to be very honest, over the course of my life, I haven’t told a lot of people, but over the course of my life, I’ve done some really, really scary deals, deals that ended up, others which were unsuccessful, but I truly believe that the negotiations I had with Red Bull were the best, and of the best caliber.
“They were incredibly decent people to deal with. They understood exactly the situation, why I was talking to them, and the position of Adrian, who was there for 18 years, he was a great servant to them .”
“He won dozens of world championships there, but it’s probably one of the best deals I’ve done in my life, not financially, but mentally. I felt very good about the way how it’s structured.”
