Vowles still can't believe all the accidents suffered by Williams in 2024

If there was ever a team that couldn't wait for 2024 to end, and 2025 to begin, it was Williams. The British team experienced a very difficult season last year: relegated to 9th place in the Manufacturers' championship with 17 small points scored, the 2024 campaign of the English team was especially marked by the numerous accidents suffered during the 24 Grand Prix. In total, there were no less than 17 accidents or clashes over the course of the season, sometimes with cars destroyed and long and costly repairs. The most striking example is certainly that of Brazil, where the FW46 was smashed against the wall three times at the hands of Alexander Albon and Franco Colapinto…

A dark year which prevented Williams from properly developing its mount and which cut short the progress of the British team, forced to look backwards rather than forwards. “It unfortunately defined our seasonlamented James Vowles in an interview with Mirror Sport on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last December. We had 17 major accidents in 23 races, a number I have never seen so high in my career. There have been accidents that we have been unable to do anything about other than accept the fact that they happened. And it's incredibly frustrating. [Le Qatar] was a good example: our two cars were collateral victims, but it cost us dearly. »

Volwes and the bad memory of Australia

“The last race [au Qatar]once again, was marked by considerable damage… this seems to have been the story of our season. Every time we moved forward, we looked back trying to fix things. It's the worst thing anyone could hope for, added the British leader, who confided that his worst memory of 2024 is having left Logan Sargeant on the sidelines during the Australian Grand Prix due to lack of spare chassis. At the worst time, we had very serious accidents. I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my career by only running one car. But then you had to make up for lost time and that's unfortunately what defined our season. »

If Logan Sargeant, guilty of too many errors and anonymous performances, was replaced during the season by Franco Colapinto, the Argentinian was also guilty of several costly blunders despite a more interesting race pace and a better accounting performance. From now on, Williams wants to quickly turn the page of 2024 to write that of 2025, where it will welcome Carlos Sainz alongside Alexander Albon in order to take a step forward in the hierarchy… and, we hope for it, to reduce its carbon fiber bill .
