Marc Márquez's 2024 season at Gresini Racing was very successful for the Spanish driver, who managed to finish third in the drivers' standings while winning three races during the season. The eight-time world champion has regained confidence and joy, having made the strong choice to leave Honda after years of collaboration. But while Márquez's season has been successful, Márquez's chief mechanic has made an admission that will get people talking about the driver, believing that the latter could have won much earlier in the season.
The confession of Márquez's chief engineer
In the Crash.net podcast, Frankie Carchedi, Márquez's chief mechanic at Gresini, seemed to have some regrets regarding the missed opportunities in the first part of the championship for the Spanish driver. But he also praised his confidence and calm. “It took time [pour gagner]especially at the start of the year. Maybe if we hadn't started on the fifth row but on the third or second row, he might have been able to win earlier in the year. I remember Jerez quite well. Unfortunately, we crashed into a puddle during the sprint race while leading. It probably had a little effect, I don't know, in the main race. Maybe things could have gone a little differently if he had won earlier, but we were also coming out of Austin, where we had a brake problem. It was important to see the arrival [à Jerez]. I think there were a lot of races where he could have started from a better place at the start of the year“, confided Carchedi, then praising Márquez's behavior. “He had great confidence in what we were doing and what we were trying. There was never the slightest panic, even at the start of the year, when we weren't in Q2, we were still able to do things well for Q2 and move forward. It's always difficult with tires that can overheat [en étant en milieu de classement] but I would say that his greatest quality, forgetting all the technical side, is his mental approach. The way he believes it, I've never seen anything close to it“, assured the chief mechanic of the Spaniard, now a factory rider at Ducati with a view to 2025.
