Champions League standings vs team budgets

This Champions League is crazy, the proof is in comparing budgets and sporting rankings.

It is subject to criticism, some of which is well-founded. But we must still recognize this new formula of the Champions League, with 36 teams and a single pool, that it reveals teams and gives rise to surprises day after day. How better to measure it than by comparing the sporting rankings of clubs to the budgets of the teams involved.

Because the evidence is there: the rich are in difficulty while the modest are sublimated. The remark is particularly true only for French teams. As we noted in Sports for each of the teams involved, Stade Brestois only has the 33rd highest budget estimated this 2024-2025 season at 45 million euros. And yet, he is 11th after five of the eight days of C1. The differential is therefore positive by +22. This is the best performance so far in the competition.

is as successful as PSG disappoints

LOSC and AS Monaco are also improving, better than the respective financial means allow. Conversely, however, PSG is, let's put it this way, in trouble. Like Real Madrid, which it follows in the sporting rankings. and Real have the two biggest budgets in world football this season. And yet, if the competition stopped now, Paris SG would be eliminated, when Kylian Mbappé's club would secure the last qualifying place for the play-offs. Not great for ambitious people…

There are, at this stage of the format, only four clubs which are in a balance close to +/-1, namely Arsenal positively and Celtic, Geona and Slovan Bratislava in the other direction. The budgets communicated are all ours at Sportune, both from officials and estimates based on the official social accounts of each of the competing teams.
