This is perhaps the most unusual professional reconversion in the history of sport. Quadruple Formula 1 world champion between 2010 and 2013 at the wheel of a Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel (37) is about to be at the helm of his own organic farm.
The former German pilot, who retired two seasons ago, announced that he had resumed his studies in Switzerland. “I am completing training in agriculture,” he said at a ceremony held this weekend in the German city of Braunschweig.
The man nicknamed “Baby Schumi”, who worked for the BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin teams during his sixteen-year career, is aiming for a diploma which will not, however, give him the status of a farmer. “But if I succeed, I will be able to run my own business,” specifies the native of Heppenheim.
Sebastian Vettel, 53 victories and 122 podiums in Formula 1, has never hidden the fact of being a true lover of nature, despite his status as a driver. The German had a click during the confinement linked to the coronavirus pandemic, four years ago now.
“I'm interested in agriculture because, as an athlete, I'm interested in what I need to eat to be in shape, in what I can do to eat healthier and get more out of my body,” confided -he in 2021.
The man who today lives on a farm in Switzerland, surrounded by his family, has often campaigned to defend environmental protection during his career. In this sense, he installed eleven beehives near the Suzuka circuit (Japan) last year. The former driver also picked up trash around the Interlagos circuit (Brazil) two weeks ago.
Sebastian Vettel is also the headliner of the “Race without Trace” campaign, which encourages the adoption of alternative fuels. This weekend, he was also awarded the “LupoLeo” prize for his commitment to the environment.
