“I don’t have the money to buy my son a Formula 1 team”

Sergio Pérez is going through a particularly delicate season. At the wheel of his Red Bull, the Mexican driver accumulated poor performances, which relegated him to eighth place in the drivers' standings. Conversely, his teammate Max Verstappen largely dominates this same championship and is on the verge of winning his fourth world title. The gap between the two teammates in the ranking is colossal: 242 points.

In this context, it is not surprising that rumors of Pérez's possible departure or retirement are circulating. His lackluster results could also jeopardize Red Bull's chances of finishing beyond third in the constructors' championship, which would be the team's worst result since 2019.

However, Antonio Pérez, father of the Mexican driver, once again defended his son's place in . According to him, it is thanks to his talent that he still has a seat in the discipline.

I'm not Mr. Stroll, I don't have the money to buy my son a Formula 1 team and we don't have the capital to be there. Checo is there thanks to him, he got there thanks to him, he is still there thanks to him and the position he occupies is his”, Antonio Pérez told ESPN.

Still according to Antonio Pérez, it is only natural that his son is still in F1 since he has the support of many sponsors and an entire country.

Everyone else knows that they need sponsors, that they need the support of the country and, right now, Checo Pérez is the most famous person in this country (Mexico). In the world and in Latin America, he made a great revolution. Everyone else must earn their place”, concluded the father of the Red Bull driver.

While the names of Franco Colapinto and Liam Lawson are often linked to rumors seeing Sergio Pérez being let go by Red Bull, the Mexican seems in a good position to keep his Red Bull wheel in 2025.
