Oscar Piastri was hoping to have a good race in Brazil after the first laps, when he was in a chasing group. But the McLaren F1 driver crashed into Liam Lawson, and he apologized after making a mistake that earned him a penalty.
“The day was difficult from start to finish” Piastri said. “The first half of the race seemed very fast, Lando [Norris] was stuck behind George [Russell]I was stuck behind Liam [Lawson].”
“I got rid of Liam, but not quite like I would have liked. I think the second half of the race, after the red flag, we were just slow. I think we both struggled with the pace and it was around thirty fairly difficult laps.”
“I was stuck behind him for a long time and I didn't get far enough away from him. I talked to him about it, he told me that he hadn't seen me either, which in those conditions is completely normal, but it was clearly my fault and the penalty was deserved.”
According to Piastri, the fact that several drivers remained on intermediates in a heavy downpour highlighted the problem with Pirelli's extreme tires. : “I don't think we expected it to rain this much. Honestly, the hardest part of the race was under the safety car, trying to stay on the track.”
Judging the race “dangerous”the Australian continued: “I think it highlighted a little bit the problem we have with the wet tires when everyone is begging for a red flag but refusing to switch to the wet tires because they are so bad.”
“So it’s quite a dangerous situation where the cars are struggling to stay on the track behind the safety car, but it’s not really anything new, so hopefully we can try to change things now. “
