RBF1 was hoping for big points by starting in third and fourth positions. Yuki Tsunoda ultimately finished eighth and explained that he had been cautious throughout the race. He believes his switch to wet tires would have paid off if the race had not been interrupted.
“It was tricky, the conditions were very difficult, I concentrated on staying on the track, especially when the rain increased, we didn’t want to put the car into the wall” said the Japanese pilot.
“I managed to keep third place, we then switched to extreme tires and it could have been very good without the red flag. But the other cars were fast, especially the Alpine. When I looked clean I I was able to hold them back, but when they got it, they flew away.”
Tsunoda regrets that Alpine succeeded in its strategic bet and overtook Williams, Haas but especially RB F1 in the standings: “It’s a shame that Pierre took third place because they are sixth among the constructors, but we will come back stronger.”
Liam Lawson had a difficult race, which was compromised by a spin caused by Oscar Piastri. This incident made him lose three places and removed him from the chasing group he was trying to stay behind.
“I almost crashed about ten times, even in the pit lane, when I arrived, I couldn't turn. I was going straight towards the wall of tires and I narrowly avoided it” Lawson said. “Well done to Alpine for staying out, that’s what we should have done. But I also lost time earlier because of the spin with Piastri.”
“Every lap, from the exit of turn 12 until the last corner, we tried to have the maximum traction. We had to use the rear tires, but I was in a car train and it got a little erased, but we had to be very concentrated.”
