A new “ridiculous” and “unacceptable” fuel shortage

Fabio Quartararo breaks down again! For the second time in three races, the Frenchman finished the race at reduced speed after running out of fuel. At the Emilia-Romagna GP, this caused him to lose two positions and at Motegi, this mishap cost him one, to the benefit of Johann Zarco. Only 12th under the checkered flag, Quartararo did not hide his annoyance.

“We ran out of gas again”declared the Frenchman to Canal+. “We’re already ridiculous on the track, if we’re also ridiculous with running out of fuel… I don’t know what we’re doing with that aspect, but it’s unacceptable to finish twice without fuel in three races.”

On Saturday, Quartararo explained that Yamaha has been playing a lot with consumption maps for several weeks, even if it means taking risks: “Since we’re not making a lot of progress in the straight line and in acceleration, we’re trying to really play with the limit on the engine maps, and especially on the gasoline maps. That’s what we’ve been testing quite a bit since Misano.”

Quartararo thinks his team is taking too many risks for marginal gains… which are ultimately costly in points: “I don’t think that by putting a slightly different map, it’s going to help us gain much, especially looking at the position we had this weekend. I don’t think we really had to play as much with the limit, we will have to have explanations because as I said, it is unacceptable.”

Alerts did not work

During his meeting with journalists, Fabio Quartararo explained that his motorcycle was supposed to warn him in the event of excessive consumption, so that he could change the map and reduce the power, in a fairly imperceptible way while riding. The problem was that the information that appeared was not the correct one.

“We have a strategy: I have to do two laps with map 1, then I change. I call for a light, if it is green, I can go up, if it is yellow, I have to go back down, and red I have to go back down [encore plus]. I still have the green light, so… that’s how it is. There is no light showing.”

“In Misano, I still had a light displayed, except that it never came down. But there, I had no light displayed, so it’s boring.”

“If it is not shown to me, I cannot know it”summed up Quartararo. “It’s up to me to do it, with the instructions that the team gives me, but there aren’t any. Let’s say that the instructions didn’t work.”
