Fernando Alonso’s incredible F1 goal before he retires

After taking a short two-year break at the end of the 2018 Formula 1 season, Fernando Alonso set out in search of the triple crown. A mission that all pilots dream of, but which is difficult to accomplish. It brings together the three greatest successes in motorsport: the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 hours of and the Indianapolis 500 miles. Between this period of time, the Bull of Asturias set out to conquer victory in the double round of the clock on soil, something he achieved twice with Toyota. Unfortunately, his tour of the United States was not as successful. The Spaniard missed his chance to win on the motor speedway oval before leaving for the Dakar.

During the 2021 F1 campaign, the double world champion made his return to the French team Alpine, before leaving the ship to join Aston Martin in 2023. At the start of this 2024 campaign, the native of Oviedo has extended his contract with the British team for two more years. In his latest statements, the latter explained that this was going to be his last signing before retiring for good. But since the arrival of Adrian Newey as technical director and the new infrastructure at the Silverstone factory, his opinion has changed a lot.

The goal, to win the title again

During an event organized by Cognizant, main sponsor of Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso spoke about his latest participations at Le Mans, Indianapolis and the Dakar. In the words of the Spaniard, he decided to subscribe to the triple crown to devote himself fully to Formula 1 and become world champion in the years that followed.

“I tried my luck at the Indy 500 three times and I didn’t succeed. It’s the only thing I miss [pour la Triple couronne] but for the moment, it’s not in my plans. I am very, very focused on Formula 1 at the moment. For the next two or three years, I want to win a third world title. This is my first and only priority at the moment. After that, I’ll be 45 or 46 years old and I think because of the commitment that it will take to go do the Indy 500, the amount of learning that will have to be done again… it will be a little a little too much. At least that’s what I think today, but I can’t say it 100%.”

“I think my biggest challenge next will be the Dakar. If I can win the Dakar, it will be extremely rewarding on a personal level because I could have won in Formula 1, in endurance at Le Mans and at Daytona, and then in rallying, which will mean a lot for the driver that I am. You cannot drive a Formula 1 car like a car that has to do 24 hours at Le Mans, or like a rally car on the Dakar, where you have to cross the dunes and the Saudi roads. I had to learn from scratch in many categories, and surround myself with the best drivers in the world who were specialists in these championships, to learn from them and be humble. There is no problem accepting the fact that I had no idea how to drive a rally car, but day by day I progressed and learned from them, until I was able to run the toughest rally in the world.”
