A Nepali man’s unique lesson in resilience at the summit of Everest, despite amputation of both legs

PORTRAIT – Having had his legs amputated in Afghanistan when he wore the prestigious uniform of the Gurkhas, this regiment of Nepalese enlisted in the British army, this accomplished sportsman was able to get back up to climb the highest peaks in the world, including Everest.

We knew: “No arms, no chocolate.” Hari Budha Magar, lui, a invented: “No legs, no limits.” The 45-year-old Nepalese is one of those whose life has long been an obstacle course. Difficult childhood, injured in the army when he was in Afghanistan, double amputee at the knees… This Magar – a tribe living in the hills of Nepal – is a true force of nature, constantly strengthened by the love of his children and inhabited by its increasingly extraordinary challenges.

“I have no choice about my legs, they will never come back. Accepting this was the hardest thingbut now I have no choice. You have to be happy. Happiness is just a state of mind, ultimately. Yes, we can be happy without legs or money. We all have weaknesses and problems, no one is perfect. I wasn’t perfect when I had legs, I’m not perfect now, and I won’t be perfect in the future either!”this funny guy laughs…
