Formula 1 | Bottas only gives himself one year to attempt a return to

Valtteri Bottas wants to try to prepare for a return to Formula 1, as he confirmed when he signed for Mercedes to become its third driver in 2025. But the Finn also confirmed that he would not attempt that more than a year before seeking to change category in order to have a solid professional project.

“Yes, there has to be meaning.” Bottas said. “A random one-year contract somewhere at this stage of my career wouldn't do much for me. There would have to be a clear plan. And if there isn't , let's say for 2026, then I should definitely look elsewhere, otherwise I can still have a good career.”

“Being off the grid for over a year, I think it starts to hurt. And it's going to be harder and harder to come back if you're out for over a year. That's what I think for now. But it could be different tomorrow.”

But like Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg in recent years, Bottas thinks that a comeback is not utopian: “There are many examples that show it is possible. This will be my 12th season in Formula 1. You just need to bring that routine and the feeling of being able to get back behind the wheel.”

Although he didn't accomplish the ultimate goal of being Formula 1 world champion, the Finn is happy with his career: “I think as an athlete you're never satisfied. But if I honestly step back and look at my career so far, or if that's it, I can be proud.”

“I have always done everything I could. I was able to win the constructors' title five times, a lot of victories, podiums and great moments. So yes, I can be proud of what I have achieved. “

He also reveals having had discussions outside Formula 1, notably in IndyCar where the grid is full: “Yes, there has been some contact, which is interesting. I think, realistically, 2025 for IndyCar is coming a little too soon, unfortunately. But it's an option for the future, which I would definitely consider.”
