Lewis Hamilton ended this 2024 season and his career at Mercedes with a crazy comeback at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday and a final, high-class overtake on the last lap. Which earned him praise from his former friend and Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg.
Sunday marked the end of a very long page between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. The British driver is leaving the German team at the end of this year to join Scuderia Ferrari in 2025. But Sir Lewis Hamilton could not leave without giving his team and the public a final blow. That's what he did Sunday afternoon. Qualified 16th on the starting grid after completely missing his Q1, the seven-time world champion offered us a superb climb up to 4th place. And to top it all off, he overtook his teammate on the last lap of the race.
One last F1 GP at honorable Mercedes
An outing with panache for the man who found his way to victory this season after two blank years. An outing which his former teammate at Mercedes, Nico Rosberg, returned to. The 2016 world champion, consultant for the Sky Sports F1 channel, was rave about this comeback and overtaking:
“The way he drove was that of a seven-time World Champion, greatest of all timethanks to this running speed again… He overtook George at the end and George went to the front, while Lewis went to the back. It was phenomenal driving from Lewis. The way he lined it up, it was perfection. Throughout this section he overtook from the outside. It was incredible. Driving a seven-time world champion. Respect”.
