Red Bull made a mistake with its choice of rear wing for Las Vegas

Red Bull made a mistake with its rear wing in Las Vegas, bringing a version that was too heavy on downforce.

Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez did not have the ideal start to the weekend in Las Vegas. The Red Bull teammates were in distant 17th and 19th positions at the end of FP2, certainly on medium tires.

Auto Motor und Sport, a well-informed German media outlet, indicated that Red Bull lost six tenths on the straights, the fault of a rear wing specification that was too heavy on downforce.

Helmut Marko, quoted by Motorsport.com, said it was the only rear wing specification present at Las Vegas.

“We don't have another rear wing, a smaller rear wing, like we see on our competitors,” he explains. “It would be more useful, that’s for sure.”.

No further rear wing specifications will be made

Helmut Marko, Red Bull advisor, also confirmed that no other version will be brought to Las Vegas. However, the Austrian remains optimistic, not hesitating to throw a little dig at Mercedes and its habit of performing well on Fridays.

“Tomorrow is a different day”, continues Marko. “You may have seen it several times. People will be fastest on Friday or Thursday, but that doesn't mean they will be fast in the race. It is certain that we will take a reasonable step.”

As a reminder, Max Verstappen can be titled this weekend provided he is at least 60 points ahead of Lando Norris after the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Currently, 62 units separate the two drivers.

This rear wing problem could delay the Dutchman's coronation, but above all it could handicap Red Bull in the race for the constructors' title, while the mission already promises to be very complex.
