This is the kind of support Sergio Perez would probably have done without. The native of Guadalajara was defended by his father, who criticizes the media for having announced the departure of his son, ultimately on track to stay at Red Bull.
Despite performances in recent months that have been insipid at best and unworthy at worst, No. 11 should keep his seat while his contract runs until the end of 2026. Rumors surrounding his possible premature departure are still swirling, but Sergio Pérez is reportedly on his way to 'being saved by its sponsors.
“You don’t know if he’s a man or a woman anymore…”
Enough to give his father, Antonio Pérez, the idea to boast during an interview given to ESPN. The Mexican attacked the media and especially Ralf Schumacher, the former driver turned consultant, who had announced that Red Bull was going to fire its second driver after its national Grand Prix in Mexico. Something that ultimately never happened.
“Ils [les médias] should at least apologize. There is a driver who was a Formula 1 driver who became a journalist. He first declared that Checo was already no longer with Red Bull. The following week, he [Schumacher] came out of the closet.” sneered Antonio Pérez, referring to the coming out made by the six-time Grand Prix winner a few months ago.
The sixty-year-old then went deeper, implying that Ralf Schumacher was perhaps in love with his son before outright questioning his gender.
“I don't know if he was in love with Checo. There are a lot of strange things. You no longer know if he's a journalist, a woman, a man…” Sergio Pérez's father allowed himself, provoking laughter from the channel's consultants, visibly not bothered by his homophobic comments. A good example to give in 2024.
