Ranked thirteenth in the World Drivers' Championship, Lance Stroll has a string of average results and poor performances. His performance during the Brazilian Grand Prix, on the Interlagos track, caused a lot of reaction. In a new “Red Flags” podcast, the former team principal of the Haas team, Gunther Steiner, once again spoke about the Canadian's performance. This is not the first time that the latter has attacked the Aston Martin driver.
The Merano native has questioned his legitimacy to race in Formula 1. Between his crashes in qualifying and his rookie-like error in the formation lap, his mistakes on the track raise a lot of questions. Since 2017, the year he arrived in the premier category, he has never done better than the top ten at the end of the season. In Steiner's words, his presence in F1 would not have been possible without the colossal financial assistance of his father, Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin.
Gunther Steiner's statement
“The pressure got to him. He knew he had done something stupid in the formation lap and no longer took control of what he was doing. I think he panicked. In situations where the world is watching you, where you are always criticized, you do something stupid in the training lap. What to do next? Something even stupider. It's like brain failure. He never seems to be happy, no matter what. So, would he be world champion if he was happy? I don't know what it is, because some people can be good even when they are unhappy. We all think he's unhappy, but maybe that's just his expression. I think a lot of people criticize him: 'He's a bad driver. He's just here because dad has the team'. But if Dad didn't have a team, I think Lance wouldn't be a Formula 1 driver, because he doesn't want to be one.”
