If he had been able to read the future, Fernando Alonso would have done without this trip to Brazil, because it was not really worth it given the outcome. Forced to return to Europe after Mexico to treat an intestinal infection, the double world champion experienced an eventful Brazilian weekend between accident and underperformance.
A time in the fight for points, the Spaniard saw his Sunday turn sour, slowed down by the lack of level of his Aston Martin, in distress as the laps went by. To this we had to add a diminished physique, due to his health problems contracted at the start of the triple-header and an AMR24 which continued to rebound. Retirement crossed his mind but he wanted to take the checkerboard to thank his mechanics who worked hard on his car.
« It was a very difficult racehe emphasized. In other circumstances I probably would have given up but the mechanics were fantastic (…) I had to finish for them. »
Thus, Fernando Alonso completed the United States-Mexico-Brazil sequence with a discreet 14th place at Interlagos, following his retirement in Mexico and his 13th position in Austin, and in pain. Not the slightest point in three races therefore and many shortcomings highlighted a little more.
« We must re-mobilize ourselves to improve for the next three racespushes the Bull of Asturias. We need to find more performance. During this triple, we underperformed. » The message got through.
