While the leaders and populations of Western countries are worried, the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States is mostly seen as a “good thing in the world”, reveals a poll by the European Council on International Relations , published Wednesday January 15.

From India to China via Turkey and Brazil

a majority of people believe that the return of Trump, who takes office on Monday, will be positive for world peace, their country and American citizens. A particularly marked trend in India with 82% of respondents going in this direction.

“Trump's pacifying speech regarding Ukraine and the Middle East resonated around the world,” say the authors of this study, carried out in collaboration with the University of Oxford in Great Britain.

On the other hand, this sentiment is not shared by some of Washington's closest allies:

UK, EU, South Korea.

In the European Union (taking into account the average result in the 11 EU countries surveyed), only 22% of citizens think that the return of Trump will be a “good thing” for their country, 29% believe that it will be beneficial for world peace.

The British wary

It is in the United Kingdom that distrust of the future American president is strongest, with 50% of those questioned having a negative judgment.

However, believes one of the authors, Mark Leonard, “rather than trying to lead a global resistance against Trump,

Europeans should take responsibility to defend their own interests

and finding ways to build new relationships in a more transactional world.”

In Ukraine, at war with Russia, the majority of respondents are cautious. 26% think that the American billionaire's return to business will be a “good thing” for their country, but above all 55% do not have an opinion.

This survey was carried out in November 2024, just after the election of Donald Trump with a sample of 28,549 people, in 24 countries including 16 European countries (Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, , Germany, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Poland , Romania, Portugal, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey) and eight outside Europe (India, Brazil, Indonesia, China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea and United States).
