Rémi Lelandais has opened his account for this cyclo-cross season. This Saturday, he triumphed in the UCI cyclo-cross of Gernelle (see ranking). And not in any context, since he beat Timothé Gabriel, to whom he is close and who is the organizer of the Ardennes event. “It's my first of the season, I can't win many so to win here, almost in my second home, at Timothé (Gabriel), it's nice because we're close. All the staff have did a huge job to complete the circuit as quickly as possible, their dedication around Timothé was beautiful, it's nice to win and it's my way of thanking them for this weekend..
The Arkéa-B&B Hôtels runner took time to build this success. “It was quite strange because we were looking at each other in the eye at the beginning. Clément (Horny) attacked and it felt good”. The race settled down, and even more so when Joshua Dubau had an incident which put him out of the battle. “It redistributed the cards and it caused a break. I came out as a postman”. But behind, his pursuers did not give up, notably Timothé Gabriel who did not let him escape. “I felt that it was still long and that it was coming back strong so I tried to force them to make an effort”.
Finally, Rémi Lelandais and Timothé Gabriel managed to keep a margin in advance and played with their opponents. “With Timothé we played tactically without really wanting to. That smiled on me and we left”. The 22-year-old runner has mastered his subject so as not to burn his wings. “I was able to almost breathe when I needed to. It was by staying clean that I was able to save myself. There was a fight behind so that worked for us today. Afterwards it was one against one and that did it”. Rémi Lelandais therefore has the ideal confidence to tackle the next round of the Coupe de France, next weekend in Troyes, where he took 2nd place in the Espoirs World Cup round last year.
