Unbreathable atmosphere in the Cycling peloton. Suspicions of doping returned in force on the sidelines of the presentation of the Tour de France 2025 route, this Tuesday in Paris. It was supposed to be a reunion party. But several teams met the evening before, particularly worried. On the agenda: inhalation of carbon monoxide. A preparation method that is currently legal but contested, which could partly explain the exceptional performances of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.
Tuesday, the German magazine Tour revealed that the benefits of this method on respiratory capacity (VO2 max) would be much greater than expected, of the order of 5%. Which “allows a water bearer to transform into a winner,” concludes the specialist journal, citing a 2020 American study and recent comments from researchers at the University of Bayreuth.
