Senate inquiry committee puts pressure on Al-Khelaïfi, who could be questioned

What future for French football? The Senate inquiry committee on the financialization of football used its powers of control on Thursday by visiting the LFP offices, it announced two days after Vincent Labrune was re-elected as its president. Easily re-elected at the head of French professional football despite major upheavals in recent months, particularly on the subject of audiovisual rights, the president of the LFP continues to face the vigilance of the Senate.

Like their visit to the headquarters of the body this Thursday morning, senators Michel Savin, investigation rapporteur, and Laurent Lafon, chairman of the fact-finding mission, are multiplying interviews. While the report should be unveiled by the end of October, other hearings are planned, notably those of DAZN and beIN Sports, the broadcasters of the championship and of Cyril Linette, candidate defeated for the presidency of the LFP against Vincent Labrune. And Nasser Al-Khelaïfi then? “It is not forbidden,” replies Michel Savin.

“Who is the one around the table?”

The president of PSG is a very influential player in French football, particularly through his multiple roles, including that of boss of beIN Media Group, which holds part of the TV rights for Ligue 1 and all of the rights for Ligue 2. “When certain decisions are made by the league, the president of PSG does not participate. That raises questions,” notes the senator. We will see at the end of the beIN hearing. Depending on the situation, we will judge whether it is necessary to complete our work with a hearing of the president of PSG.” And Michel Savin wonders: “But who is the one around the table? The president of PSG? Of beIN? Of Qatar? It’s becoming more political.”
