Last nation in the Fifa rankings, San Marino wins the second victory in its history

Like a World Cup victory. Their World Cup. On Thursday night, at the San Marino Stadium, the San Marino players exploded with joy like never before in their careers. In the first match in League D of the Nations League, the selection of this micro-state landlocked to the west of Italy beat Liechtenstein 1-0 (goal by Sensoli, 53rd).

A victory for history for a nation that is ranked 210th and last in the Fifa rankings. In other words, the weakest in the world. It’s simple, this is only the second success in the history of San Marino. The first was obtained 20 years ago, on April 28, 2004, already against Liechtenstein and by the same score.

The end of a terrible series of 140 games without a win

Since then, San Marino (an old Republic with nearly 34,000 inhabitants) had been on a run of 140 games without a win (22 goals scored). Five players on the pitch on Thursday evening were not even born when this first victory took place.

The scenes of joy at the final whistle were therefore up to the expectations of the players, staff and supporters of San Marino. A new feat is hoped for for the next Nations League meeting, on October 10 on the Gibraltar pitch.
