England, 1879. Football is an amateur sport, still in its infancy, and still only belongs to the rich. Indeed, no working-class team has ever reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, the English Football Cup. The Old Etonians team thus dominates the early years of the Cup, but a revolution is brewing: against the rules of the FA, the owner of the working-class club Darwen FC and its associated factory, secretly pays two talented Scottish players to join the team before the quarter-finals.

Footballers from opposing classes will then have to face professional and personal upheavals to change the game – and England – forever.

The English Game is a British historical sports miniseries directed by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) and broadcast on Netflix in 2020.
