The Spaniard Karla Sofia Gascon, nominated for the Oscar for best actress for her role in “Emilia Pérez”, denounced on Friday a campaign of “terrible hatred” targeting her because of her transidentity.
“I'm going to start crying but it's really ugly. It's always the same thing, right?” lamented the Spaniard during a press conference in Uruguay on the occasion of the José International Film Festival. Ignacio (JIIFF).
“We face terrible hatred just because we make a film, because we are different, even if I don't consider myself different from anyone, but equal to everyone, as different as everyone , because there is no one like it,” lamented the actress.
The film by Frenchman Jacques Audiard, a musical odyssey about the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker, garnered 13 nominations for the most prestigious film awards, making it the most nominated non-English-speaking production of all time.
Karla Sofia Gascon became the first openly transgender actress nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 2.
“They (her detractors) went to my village to see if they remembered me,” said the actress.
“It's nonsense because it's been 30 years or so since I've been there. There will always be one who says: 'Oh, yes, I remember he played football'. Liars!” she denounced, castigating those who claim to know “just to get on TV”.
-Karla Sofia Gascon had starred in numerous Mexican series (telenovelas) before announcing her gender transition in 2018.
In “Emilia Pérez”, she plays the role of a drug trafficker, both before and after her change.
All the actresses in the film received the Best Actress Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
