On the sidelines of the presentation of the route for the next Vuelta, Chris Froome confided that 2025 would probably be his last season.
Like Lewis Hamilton, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Chris Paul and Stan Wawrinka, Christopher Froome is one of the athletes who will celebrate their 40th birthday in 2025. And if some of his “conscripts” are not yet talking about retirement (Hamilton has notably signed with Ferrari until 2027), the British racer is seriously starting to consider the end of his career. Thursday evening, he confirmed it on the microphone ofEurosport on the sidelines of the presentation of the route of the next Vuelta. “I think the time has come,” he said. Next year I will be 40 years old. My goal has always been to run until I'm 40, and I'm getting closer. I can be very happy with everything I have had the chance to achieve in this sport. Next year will potentially be my last racing season. Finishing at the Vuelta could be a great way to come full circle.” It was in 2011, at the Vuelta, that Chris Froome won his first Grand Tour, even if the victory officially went to him eight years later , following the downgrading of Juan José Cobo due to abnormal data on his biological passport.
Froome hasn't won anything since 2018
Winner of seven Grand Tours and with 46 successes to his name in total, Chris Froome has never regained his level after his terrible fall during the reconnaissance of the Roanne time trial on the Critérium du Dauphiné on June 12, 2019. The Briton has not won since the 2018 Giro and his four seasons spent so far with Israel – Premier Tech have been disappointing. However, he does not regret having continued his career for so long: “It's great to see where the sport is going and how quickly it is evolving. It is especially in the last five years that we have seen the sport moving forward. Especially in terms of technological advancements, hardware, everything is getting faster and faster. It's been really cool to witness, not so easy sometimes. Especially after my accident in 2019, I'm really happy to have continued in this sport and to have had the opportunity to continue doing what I love.“He still has one year to enjoy it.
