The winter period, marked by cold waves, leads to an increase in respiratory infections linked to the spread of viruses, including seasonal influenza and other viruses associated with climate change, such as rhinovirus. This was indicated by Professor Mahjoub Al-Aouni, specialist in virology, calling for increased vigilance and the adoption of preventive measures against these respiratory diseases.
In a statement to TAP Agency, the professor stressed that this period also coincides with the appearance and spread of new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, in particular the “XE-C” variant, which is distinguished by its speed of spread while being less serious than previous variants. He clarified that although it presents a low risk, it does not have the characteristics of a pandemic.
This variant appeared in Germany last June, before spreading to other European countries and the United States. Professor Al-Aouni confirmed that this new strain of Covid-19 spreads quickly, but remains less dangerous compared to previous ones. However, it could represent an increased danger for vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, the chronically ill and immunocompromised individuals.
Faced with the situation, the Ministry of Health recalled last Sunday the importance of following certain recommendations to protect yourself from respiratory infections. These measures include frequent hand washing with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, as well as regular ventilation of enclosed spaces. It is also advisable to avoid enclosed and crowded places, to drink water regularly and to cover your nose and mouth when moving from a closed environment to an open space.
If symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, joint and muscle pain, sore throat or runny nose appear, the ministry recommends staying at home, drinking plenty of fluids and washing your nose regularly. . It is also essential to consult a doctor and make sure to use a disposable tissue when coughing or sneezing, to avoid any contamination. In the absence of a tissue, it is advisable to cough or sneeze into your elbow.
Finally, the ministry recalled the importance of vaccination against influenza, currently available in the nearest health centers, in order to limit the spread of respiratory infections.
