The Kremlin confirmed Thursday that the United States had sent Covid-19 screening tests to Russia under President Donald Trump, but assured that it was an exchange of equipment to fight the pandemic .

In a forthcoming new book, American journalism legend Bob Woodward claims that Mr Trump secretly sent testing kits to Mr Putin. But according to the Russian presidency, it was simply international cooperation in the midst of a pandemic.

“It was the start of the pandemic, the first tests did not work well and at the beginning there was a shortage of equipment. At the time all countries were trying to make trades,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a telephone briefing with journalists.

“We sent a batch of artificial respirators (to the United States) and the Americans sent us these tests,” he added, in response to the claims in Bob Woodward’s book.

Secret exchanges denied

Mr. Peskov also once again denied another assertion by the journalist, who ensures that Donald Trump has spoken to Vladimir Putin in secret up to seven times since he left the White House in 2021.

“As for the calls, this is not true, it did not happen,” insisted the spokesperson for the Russian presidency.

A behind-the-scenes chronicler of the White House for half a century with the Washington Post, Bob Woodward revealed with Carl Bernstein the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.

In his new book “War”, to be published on October 15, he writes that Donald Trump has maintained a personal relationship with Vladimir Putin, despite the Russian offensive in Ukraine and while he aims to return to the White House.

Regarding the tests delivered to Russia, according to the account of the American media which had access to the book, Vladimir Putin received them and allegedly implored Donald Trump not to say anything: “I don’t want you to tell anyone. , people will be angry with you, not with me,” the Russian president reportedly told him.
