Thomas Kwan, a respected 53-year-old general practitioner, hatched an elaborate scheme to eliminate Patrick O’Hara, his mother’s long-time companion. In November 2023, disguised as a nurse, the doctor showed up at the couple’s home to administer a purported COVID vaccine booster. He had previously sent a fake letter supposedly from the NHS, to warn them of his arrival.
The fake nurse (and real poisoning doctor) did not skimp on the means: wig, long coat, cap, surgical gloves, medical mask and tinted glasses. He even went so far as to check his own mother’s blood pressure to perfect his character as a dedicated nurse, before injecting his fake vaccine. The next day, seeing his arm covered in blisters and a strange color, Patrick O’Hara went to the emergency room.
The doctor wanted to reclaim his mother’s house as an inheritance
According to the prosecutor cited by Reuters, Kwan’s motivation was purely financial. The doctor, described as “obsessed with money”, saw his quasi “stepfather” as a potential obstacle to his mother’s inheritance. He even allegedly installed spyware on her computer to monitor her finances.
“Mr. Kwan used his encyclopedic knowledge and research into poisons to carry out his plan,” the prosecutor said. The injected substance, probably iodomethane, caused the victim to develop necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially fatal bacterial infection.
