40,000 more inhabitants in Occitanie in 2021. In 2019, before the Covid epidemic, there were only 30,000. In 2021, migratory exchanges between Occitanie and other regions of France are largely in surplus. A figure which makes Occitanie one of the most attractive regions of France behind and New Aquitaine. This is the result of a study by INSEE, the national institute of statistics and economic studies, which compared mobility before and after Covid.

Since Covid, the small towns of Occitanie have been particularly attractive. The number of arrivals is increasing more than the number of departures. In 2021, there were 117 arrivals for 100 departures in this type of municipality. There were only 25 in 2019.

This is the case in Foix, in Ariège, in Graulhet in Tarn or even in Limoux, Prades or Marseillan.

At the same time, large urban centers like Toulouse and Montpellier are facing more departures than arrivals. Urban spaces as a whole are not as attractive as rural spaces. We see it in this graph. It represents the number of arrivals per 100 departures in Occitanie according to the type of space:

Although very few new arrivals settle in large cities, there is attractiveness in the peri-urban areas around Toulouse, , , , Saint-Gaudens and . These settlements of new arrivals, sometimes far from major employment centers, are facilitated by the development of teleworking.

A choice often linked to the living environment, but often imposed by the high costs of real estate in large urban centers. These large cities also record 80 arrivals for every 100 departures.

In 2021, more than 30,000 Ile-de-France residents settled in the Occitanie region. Between 2019 and 2021, these arrivals from Ile-de-France increased significantly: 20%, which is three times more than arrivals from other French regions.

Half move to the catchment areas of cities like Toulouse and Montpellier. The Mediterranean coast departments also attract many Ile-de-France residents, particularly those aged 50 or over. The other half settles in rural departments.

The increase is particularly strong in the following departments:

  • Lozère: +60%
  • Hear : +40%
  • Gers :    +30 %
  • Lot :       +30 %

In Hérault, arrivals from Ile-de-France are increasing ten times more than those coming from other regions.

Ile-de-France residents who settle in rural departments are older than those who move to an urban department, 43 years on average compared to 37 years.

These elements come from a study carried out by INSEE on migratory flows between Occitanie and other regions of France. It is published this Thursday, October 3, 2024.
