Belgian universities and hospitals unite around Alzheimer’s research

The Brussels universities (VUB and ULB), UCLouvain and the three Brussels university hospitals (UZ Brussel, Erasme and the Cliniques Saint-Luc) presented their joint ecosystem project on Monday, enabling the sharing of data around research into Alzheimer’s disease.

The portal, called Translate-AD, will “probably improve the diagnosis and treatment of people with the disease or who are at risk of developing symptoms later,” according to project coordinator Dr Sebastiaan Engelborghs of the VUB.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in Belgium and affects approximately 200,000 people in our country. Six percent of them are under 65 years of age. Although the disease is progressing, claiming more and more victims each year, many question marks remain about it.

With Translate-AD, the universities and university hospitals partnering in this project hope to take a new step in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease by securely sharing anonymous data on affected patients. This exchange of information will be used for research into the identification of biomarkers capable of predicting cognitive decline in patients. This could thus make it possible in the future to facilitate diagnosis and better predict the progression of the disease.

This is a first unique collaborative project between the ULB, VUB and UCLouvain communities, the universities said. The project was partly funded by Innoviris, the Brussels administration for research and innovation, to the tune of €2.8 million.
