For his first interview of the year, the new Minister of the Economy, Eric Lombard, confirmed, Monday January 6, the reduction in the remuneration of the French’s favorite investment, the Livret A – and its cousin the Sustainable Development Booklet and solidarity (LDDS) – held by eight out of ten people. “The governor of the Bank of France, François Villeroy de Galhau, will make a proposal to the Minister of Finance, most certainly a reduction”and it is “around 2.5% (…) that the decision will be made. »
If, officially, the Livret A rate, the remuneration of which had been set at 3% at the start of 2023, comes from a calculation formula which is based half on the evolution of prices over the last six months and the other half on an exchange rate between banks, in reality the subject is very political.
In these periods of budgetary scarcity, many people would like the French to spend a little more to revive growth and the economy. Because, faced with uncertainties, our fellow citizens are acting like ants and putting nearly 18% of their income aside. Result, at the end of November 2024, 426.8 billion euros were sleeping peacefully in the regulated savings accounts of the French. “The Livret A rate will fall, but inflation has also fallen sharply since it is around 1%”explains the minister.
