High circulation of respiratory viruses after the holidays: caution recommended

Flu, COVID-19, RSV… Respiratory viruses have spread rapidly in the region since the holidays, particularly affecting seniors and toddlers.

According to Dr. Guillaume Langlois, public health consultant for Mauricie and Center-du-Québec, the situation requires increased vigilance.

“What we especially need to watch out for is influenza. There are not yet a lot of cases in Mauricie, but we see that it is increasing rapidly. Gastroenteritis is also circulating, so it goes very quickly,” he explains.

Increased pressure on emergencies

Hospitals in the region are recording an increase in consultations, which adds pressure on healthcare staff. The holiday season, conducive to gatherings, contributes to this increase.

“It’s a year comparable to others, it’s just that sometimes we tend to forget. With parties and gatherings, there are people who are sick, gather in large groups and infect other people. We expect the pressure to increase in hospitals in the coming weeks,” adds the practitioner.

Good actions to limit the spread

To reduce risks, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, it is important to adopt simple actions:

  • Frequent hand washing
  • Surface disinfection
  • Wearing a mask in case of symptoms
  • Avoid gatherings if you are sick

“When you are sick, you do not go to the grocery store to contaminate, touch all the fruits and vegetables one after the other, after coughing or going to the toilet. We stay at home as much as possible,” recalls Dr. Langlois.

When to consult?

If you have symptoms, 811 and pharmacists can provide advice before going to the emergency room. These alternatives make it possible to find rapid solutions while avoiding overloading hospitals.

By applying these recommendations, everyone can help limit the spread of viruses and protect the most vulnerable people.
