A (more contagious) variant of COVID is spreading in Europe

    • XEC

This is the name of the COVID-19 variant first detected in June in Germany. XEC is starting to spread more and more in Europe, health authorities note. According to scientists, it is more contagious and could become the next dominant variant worldwide.

    • “At present, the XEC variant appears to be the most likely to make its way […] but it will take several months before it reaches high levels.”

      ERIC TOPOL

Director of the Scripps Research Institute, California

    • Symptoms of XEC are similar to those of previous variants:

      • Fever, fatigue and body aches
      • Headaches and sore throats
      • Nasal congestion and cough
      • Possible gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and diarrhea

Health authorities remind that vaccination remains an effective tool to protect against COVID-19. Although there is no vaccine yet for XEC, as it is a sub-variant of Omicron, existing vaccines should offer good protection.

So far, XEC has been identified in about fifteen countries in Europe, Asia and North America. Some cases have been identified in Canada, but its presence here is still marginal compared to what is observed in Europe.
