Student Stops Burglars At Her Home By Sending Text Message To 114

Rennes: a student stops burglars at her home by sending a text message to 114

A healthy reflex. An 18-year-old student had two burglars arrested who had broken into her home in Rennes while she was still there, according to information from France Bleu, confirmed by the police to BFMTV.com.

The incident occurred this Saturday, August 31, at around 4:30 in the morning. “She heard people whispering, she had the reflex to hide in her room. She then sent a text message to the emergency number 114,” Captain Catherine Jaunâtre, head of the communications office at the Interdepartmental Directorate of the National Police in Rennes, told France Bleu.

Burglars caught red-handed

The number 114 is the emergency number for people who have difficulty hearing or speaking (deaf, hard of hearing, aphasic). It is also recommended in situations where speaking could be dangerous, as in the case of the Rennes student.

114 is available in several formats. The website and the application allow you to contact agents trained in French Sign Language. Sending a text message to this number can also allow you to contact emergency services.

Thanks to the student’s message, “the canine brigade team was able to intervene, less than a quarter of an hour after the young woman’s text message,” according to Catherine Jaunâtre. The two burglars were caught red-handed and were arrested. Contacted by BFMTV.com, the Interdepartmental Directorate of the National Police of Rennes stated that they must be tried in immediate appearance this Wednesday.

The number 114 remains largely unknown, according to a survey by the Viavoice institute conducted for this service in January. Only 3% of French people cite it among the emergency numbers they know, a rate that rises to only 6% for those directly concerned.
