34 prisoners on hunger strike for the two-year anniversary of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement

This Sunday, September 15, 34 political prisoners “began a hunger strike to commemorate the second anniversary of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement and the assassination of Mahsa Amini,” announced Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammidi on X.

“Once again, the political and ideological prisoners of Evin have started a hunger strike in solidarity with Iranian protesters against the government’s oppressive policies,” she continued in her message.

Imprisoned since 2021

Narges Mohammadi, 51, who has been arrested and convicted many times, has been detained in Evin Prison in the Iranian capital since 2021. An activist against the death penalty and for women’s rights, Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Prize in October 2023 for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

She is one of the main faces of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising in Iran. The movement, which has seen women drop their veils, cut their hair and protest in the streets, was sparked by the death in 2022 of a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, Mahsa Aminiafter his arrest in Tehran for not respecting the strict Islamic dress code. The protest was severely repressed.
