Body of activist Aysenur Eygi in Türkiye for second autopsy before funeral

The body of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, killed during a demonstration in the occupied West Bank, was received with honors in Turkey on Friday, where a second autopsy was carried out, before being transferred to the family home in Didim (southwest), where it will be buried on Saturday.

The body of the young woman, transported from Tel Aviv via Baku, was saluted at Istanbul airport by an army honor guard, reserved for martyrs, during a brief ceremony presided over by the governor of the metropolis and representatives of the ruling AKP (Islamic-conservative) party, according to the governorate’s X account.

She was then taken to Izmir (west), the country’s third city, where a new autopsy was carried out before reaching the small seaside resort of Didim, on the Aegean coast.

The results of this new examination, after that carried out by three Palestinian doctors, “will constitute evidence that we will use”, indicated the Minister of Justice Yilmaz Tunç.

The minister plans to issue international arrest warrants depending on the results of the investigation, he said.

Turkey, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, has opened an investigation entrusted to the Ankara prosecutor.

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi’s father, Mehmet Suat Eygi, 60, who arrived Thursday from the United States where he lives, confirmed that she would be buried Saturday in Didim, 160 km south of Izmir.

“Aysenur was a very special person. She was sensitive to human rights, to nature, to everything,” he stressed.

Mr Eygi welcomed the decision of the Turkish authorities to open an investigation into “this arbitrary assassination”.

“I expect the same from the US government, because Aysenur was only 10 months old when she arrived in the United States,” he said.

“the cause of all Turkey” –

“The Palestinian cause is the cause of all of Turkey. The State of Israel will be held accountable before history,” promised the chairman of the CHP, the first Turkish opposition party, Özgür Özel, in front of the coffin in Izmir.

The young woman was shot in the head while participating in a demonstration on September 6 in the northern occupied West Bank. The Israeli army considered Tuesday “highly probable” that shots coming from its men killed her “indirectly and unintentionally”.

In addition to the victim’s parents, her partner is also present in Didim, where her grandfather and at least one uncle still reside.

The street where the family’s house is located has been hung with Turkish flags and has been blocked off by police since Thursday. A tent has been set up to receive condolences and, at the cemetery, the grave has been dug.

The young woman’s funeral will be held early Saturday afternoon, after midday prayers.

A large turnout is expected, including “high-level” government representatives, AKP spokesman Ömer Çelik assured, and members of Turkey’s main Islamic NGO IHH.

The latter organized a funeral prayer on Friday in Istanbul, in front of the great mosque in the conservative district of Fatih.

Turkey has strongly condemned the death of its national: its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has affirmed that his country will do everything “so that the death of our daughter, Aysenur Ezgi, does not go unpunished”.

The Minister of Justice called on the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial and arbitrary executions to establish an independent commission of inquiry and to draft a report on the matter.

For his part, the Ankara prosecutor will address his report to the UN Human Rights Council, “in order to include it in the ongoing genocide proceedings against Israel before the International Court of Justice and in the ongoing investigation before the International Criminal Court,” Mr. Tunç insisted.
