SpaceX launches Polaris Dawn mission, first private spacewalk

A billionaire, a pilot and two SpaceX employees blasted off from Florida on Tuesday on a mission that is set to mark a new milestone in commercial space exploration, with the first private spacewalk in history. “Polaris Dawn liftoff!” Elon Musk’s company announced on the billionaire’s social network X, to illustrate a photo of the Falcon 9 rocket taken as it took off from the Kennedy Space Center.

The right combination?

The launch had been postponed several times in the past two weeks, particularly due to poor weather conditions. The commander of this mission, scheduled to last five days and named Polaris Dawn, is American billionaire Jared Isaacman, who has been working with Elon Musk’s company for several years and is partly financing the trip, the cost of which has not been revealed.

One of the main goals is to test the company’s first-ever spacesuits, recognizable by their futuristic look. “I imagine that one day, a lot of people or even families will be jumping around on the lunar surface in their SpaceX suits,” Jared Isaacman said at a press conference last month. “It’s a huge honor to have the opportunity (…) - 20minutes
