As the 2024 school year looms, a new fuel price hike is plunging Nigeria into gloom. An active member of OPEC, Nigeria is unable to offer cheap fuel at its service stations. From 185 naira per liter in May 2023, gasoline now costs nearly 1,000 naira in Lagos, and Nigerians are suffering.

For eight months, Abigail’s car has been parked in the courtyard of her building. This civil servant prefers the discomfort of shared taxis: ” This type of vehicle is dangerous because of insecurity, but there is no choice. Even this mode of collective transport is expensive. Because if I fill up my car, to go to college or work for a week, my salary will not be able to pay or support the cost of fuel. »

Abigail shares a three-room apartment with her two sisters Celine and Clara. Despite their regular salaries, these three young women save money on everything. Celine has just bought 10 liters of gasoline for the generator, and this quantity must last at all costs: ” These ten liters, we still have to manage them. This means that if there is no electricity, we have to stay in the dark, or use our flashlight phone. So, I don’t consider myself middle class anymore… ».
