Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, coronavirus… 600 new drugs could be marketed by 2027

The abundant innovation in the field of health is a challenge for public finances, which must finance it.

Science is advancing, and offering prospects of healing to patients who previously had none. Hepatitis C, long believed to cause liver fibrosis, can now be cured in 99% of cases thanks to a drug, the first generation of which, Gilead’s Sovaldi, was marketed in in 2013. More recently, it is cystic fibrosis which has made a giant leap », recalls Leem, the lobby of pharmaceutical laboratories.

The pace of research is not slowing down. 1,800 clinical research programs are currently underway around the world, Leem identified in a prospective document published Tuesday. They could lead to the marketing of 600 new molecules by 2027. A quarter of these programs aim to treat cancer. That of the “non-small cell” lung is the one which concentrates the greatest number of potential treatments, followed by breast cancer and ovarian cancers.
