In 1973, José Giovanni signed his seventh feature film, and not just any feature film, since it was the highest rated of his career. It’s about an ex-mobster and a retired inspector. Film buffs will no doubt have understood that this is the thriller Two Men in the City.

Gino Strabliggi (played on screen by Alain Delon) is released after serving a ten-year prison sentence. Following the advice of Germain Cazeneuve (played by Jean Gabin), an inspector who took care of him and continues to take a friendly interest in him, he decides to lead an honest life, far from the temptations of the past.

But shortly after his release, Sophie (Ilaria Occhini), his wife, dies in a car accident.

Alongside this striking duo formed by Alain Delon and Jean Gabin, we find well-known names in French cinema, such as Gérard Depardieu, Michel Bouquet (Renoir), Mimsy Farmer (More), Bernard Giraudeau (Le Fils Favorite) or Victor Lanoux (Louis la Brocante).

It was in 1963, on the set of Mélodie en sous-sol by Henri Verneuil, that Alain Delon, aged 28, met Jean Gabin, 59 years old. From that moment, a deep and sincere friendship was formed between the two actors, even though thirty years separated them.

Moreover, the man who played the role of Commissioner Jules Maigret in Maigret sets a trap had the habit of nicknamed his comrade “Alain the kid”. When Jean Gabin died on November 15, 1976, Alain Delon confided, with a heart full of emotion: “He was everything to me, he taught me everything, he gave me everything“.

After a first successful duet in Mélodie en sous-sol, the two actors return to work in another feature film by filmmaker Henri Verneuil, Le Clan des Siciliens, and a final time in Deux hommes dans la ville.
