4,500 km aboard an old Jeep Wagoneer gives you time to discover yourself. However, the two passengers of the antique SUV that is being lugged from New York to Los Angeles have known each other for 27 years.
Except he became her. Andrew is now called Harper, and told his old pal Will Ferrell the news via email. Hence the latter’s suggestion, a good big one road trip as a couple, to rediscover each other, eat donuts and chat.
Band reconstruction of Saturday night live dissolved
Will Ferrell, we know him. Ricky Bobby, king of the circuits, that’s him. Star in the US, he is unfortunately a little less known here. The actor worked for a long time at Saturday night live from the NBC channel of which Andrew Steele was the screenwriter and author. It is therefore to explain themselves that the two thieves hit the road, taking on board a film crew to produce this documentary, which has been available for a few weeks.
We follow them aboard the Wagoneer, in very good condition, parked in Wall Mart parking lots, in front of lost bars in the Texas countryside, or driving through the fabulous landscapes of Utah or Colorado, passing by kitsch hotels from Las Vegas to Santa Monica, at the end of the end of Route 66.
Break down taboos and prejudices
But this road trip is not just a worn-out tourist brochure on an America of clichés. We see Harper in full transition confronting the reality of the deep country, the reaction of those who are not necessarily woke and democratic like him and Will Ferrell. But the one who has become a woman does not hide his transition from anyone. When he doesn’t dare, it’s his friend who spontaneously talks about it to everyone. So, through conviction and kindness, sometimes reluctance disappears.
However, this Will & Harper is not just a learned doc. He doesn’t lecture, he only explains, and with humor too. The two sidekicks are very funny. We knew it for the actor, but we should have suspected it for its author.
