Queen Margrethe’s guests had to brave the snowfall to go to the Christian IX palace this Friday. Queen Margrethe had hosted a New Year’s reception in honor of her patronages. Champagne, fruit juice and cakes were served at this reception which continued the end-of-year festivities.

On the occasion of the New Year, Queen Margrethe receives the leaders of the associations she defends
A year ago, almost to the day, Queen Margrethe abdicated in favor of her son, on the day of her 52nd reign. This January 10, 2025, Queen Margrethe was preparing to celebrate her first year as former sovereign. Although she left her position as head of state to her son, King Frederik X, Queen Margrethe did not retire. In particular, it continues to ensure commitments linked to its patronage.

Champagne and cakes to extend the holiday season
In the weeks following the accession to the throne of Frederik Queen Margrethe has chosen to retain a number of patronages linked to art, history and crafts. Queen Margrethe went from 81 patronages when she reigned to 20 patronages. From now on, patronages are granted for a period of five years, then they will be re-evaluated on a case-by-case basis to decide whether they will extend the patronage for another five years.

This January 10, Queen Margrethe, 84, invited the heads of the 20 associations of which she is godmother to participate in a New Year’s reception. Queen Margrethe was waiting for her guests at Christian IX Palace in Amalienborg, her home in Copenhagen. Guests arrived in the snow, greeted by the UngKlang vocal ensemble who performed traditional winter-themed songs.
The representatives of the associations greeted one by one Queen Margrethe, who was sitting on her chair due to mobility problems. Queen Margrethe then received news from each of the associations, ensuring that her guests were all enjoying this friendly moment by drinking champagne, fruit juice or coffee and eating cakes.
